Family FunSpot: Water Bottle Fireflies

Water Bottle Fireflies

Water Bottle Fireflies
7/14/21

We love summer fireflies floating in the twilight.  Make your own fireflies with ease by following the directions below.

You will need:

  • Water bottle
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Pony-beads
  • Tulle net fabric
  • Hot Glue
  • Craft eyes
  • Pom poms
  • Sharpie marker
  • Glowsticks—we found ours at Michaels

Instructions:

Remove the paper label from your water bottle and keep the cap handy

Thread a bead onto the ends of 5 pipe cleaners—bending the pipe cleaner to secure the bead

Wrap 4 pipe cleaners around the body of the water bottle—leaving the ends to help the firefly stand

Wrap the pipe cleaner near the top of the bottle to create antennae

Cut the tulle into 4”x12” strips

Tie the tulle “wings around the bottle and push them together at the middle of the body

Next draw a smile on the surface of the water bottle cap

Hot melt the craft eyes onto either side of the water bottle

After everything has dried, fill the bottle with water, you can also skip this step-but water reflects the glow stock the best

Last, crack the glow stick so that it begins to glow and place it inside the bottle, and re-cap tightly

This is a fun post-BBQ craft when you have a bunch of kiddos at your home looking for something fun to do. If you wait until twilight, your craft will be ready to glow when the sun goes down. Best of all, your fireflies will last a very long time, because it’s simple to replace the glowsticks!

Patriot Poke Cake
7/1/21

Bake this cool and colorful cake for your 4th of July picnic or BBQ. It’s simple to make and inexpensive too—best of all, the kids can help you whip it up—it’s that easy!

Patriot Poke CakeYou will need:

  • 9×12 Cake pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • White cake mix
  • Strawberry Jell-O
  • Berry Blue Jell-O
  • Spoon
  • Drinking straw
  • Eyedropper
  • 1 Container whipped cream topping
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Fresh blueberries

Instructions:

Bake cake in a 9” × 12” pan according to package directions

Let cake cool completely—you can refrigerate it to speed the process

Using the drinking straw, poke holes all over the cake

Mix Jell-O with boiling water until dissolved, then add ice-cold water (according to package)

Squirt the one flavor of Jell-O mixture into every other row of holes

Do the same using the other flavor Jell-O, squirting it into the leftover rows of holes

Cover and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight so the Jell-O sets

Remove the cake from the refrigerator and “frost” the cake with softened whipped topping

Garnish with fresh strawberries and blueberries

Cover and return the cake to the refrigerator until ready to serve

This recipe makes 24 servings of cake, more than enough for the whole gang.  It’s the perfect way to cap off a great 4th of July celebration. Now, grab a seat for the fireworks display and ENJOY!
